GEC is currently assisting the Gawler Community Garden Committee with their community consultation re a potential community garden in the region. Please see below for details re current opportunities to have your say in the process.
‘Let us introduce ourselves, we are the Gawler Community Garden Committee and have been progressing the dream to establish a Community Garden for a number of years. We are a not-for-profit community group which is aligned closely with the Gawler Environment Centre, who have already provided support, guidance, and direction to a group of Gawler locals hoping to establish a welcoming and inclusive community garden.
Our biggest challenge to date has been the securing of suitable land. Currently we are working through the process with Gawler Council, with the proposed site for the garden being a section of community land located behind the Evanston Gardens Community Centre and Library on Angle Vale Road, Evanston Gardens. As a community group we are grateful for the support of the Gawler Council to potentially lease this parcel of unused land to us. We hope to create a garden which will be something for the Gawler community to be proud of.
The Gawler Community Garden is being developed by a group of volunteers who are busy establishing all the background requirements. As we have fast found out there is a lot more to establishing a garden than just digging into the soil. The committee has a strong support base and many other community members who are keen to get the physical garden started.
We are fast approaching a pivotal milestone in the Garden development, and we now need your support. From Monday 24 May through to Monday 28 June, we are embarking on engaging the community to seek ideas and feedback regarding the development of a future community garden. In this regard we invite the community to attend a workshop and/or drop-in sessions that the committee is hosting. These are taking place on the following dates:
Drop-in Session 1
Wednesday 2 June, 10.30am –12.30pm
Gawler Civic Centre (Ground Floor, outside the Library)
Community Workshop
Tuesday 8 June, 9.30am –11.00am

Drop-in Session 2
Thursday 24 June, 10.30am –12.30pm

If you are unable to attend any of these sessions you can still have your say via email, for details please go to: https://www.gawler.sa.gov.au/your…/current-consultations
Further information and updates will be made available via our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/gawlercommunitygarden
We are hoping that you are able to take some time to chat with us, look over our proposed site plan for the garden and provide any further ideas or suggestions. We have also developed a management plan which may address any points of concern you may have. We look forward to hearing your feedback and are happy to provide further information if you would like to support the ongoing development of the community garden’.
Kind Regards,
Debbie Nelson, Chairperson, on behalf of the Gawler Community Garden Committee
